As a starting point for research into newspapers' coverage of hurricanes and tropical storms, we have gathered the datasets below. More information on their creation and potential next steps can be found in the dLOC as Data project documentation.

 

hurricane_mentions_dlocasdata_20210926.csv: Extracted instances of text snippets containing hurricane-related keywords from seven newspaper titles, Aruba Esso News, Barbados Advocate, Barbados Mercury & Bridgetown Gazette, El Mundo, The Herald, Haiti Sun, Le Matin.


hurricane_mentions_known_dlocasdata_20210926.csv: Extracted instances of text snippets containing hurricane-related keywords, where the specific hurricane or tropical storm has been identified. Most records include place names, coordinates, and the storm start/end dates.


1950s_hurricanes_geo_dlocasdata_20210926.csv: Geocoded instances of text snippets containing hurricane-related keywords, associated with Hurricane Dog (1950), Hurricane Charlie (1951), and Hurricane Hazel (1954). Created as part of example demonstrating correlation between news coverage and hurricane paths.


bm_geo_dlocasdata_20210612.csv: Geocoded instances of text snippets containing hurricane-related keywords found in the Barbados Mercury & Bridgetown Gazette, 1772-1848. Created as part of example demonstrating hurricane coverage prior to NOAA data availability.


hurdat2_dlocasdata_20210926.csv: Timestamped storm path data, 1850-2018, adapted from NOAA National Hurricane Center Data Archive.
